I have found building up, wide and balanced works well along with open table space (similar to the ';white space'; rule of writing a resume). Also, think of using shapes in your display layout beyond squares. Triangles are more balanced than squares and circles and arcs are more fluid.
Use a nice cloth table cloth. NO PLASTIC, this will make it look cheesy and cosmetics are a luxury you need people to buy. Throw in some other extras such as a vase of flowers, mirrors, or table fountains.
Have samples available for use and take home. I have found people like to try color before they buy.
