Do you have to be an esthetician to work at a makeup counter in a department store?

I don't have a license. Can I still sell their makeup or do I have to have a license in case some one wants to try something? Do you have to be an esthetician to work at a makeup counter in a department store?
Most places you don't need any license. A lot of places say you need experience though :)
